Politics...

The Balkemas are friends from Illinois that we served with at Grace Church. Chris Balkema is running for Congress so we have been receiving his letters updating us on his journey for over a year. It's quite a process. We hope he wins! Politics bring up strong feelings for many people. The word government or president can throw many into heated discussion. Arguing comes but..."Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." I think, it's kind of funny that it is stated twice in the same verse that the authorities are established by God. We won't all agree, but we should all remember the God is in control. He has set the authorities in place and has said, "Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor." (Romans 13:1-7)

I think, the idea of respecting and honoring people we disagree with is a struggle. God knows that, and that's probably why He told us to respect and honor authority. I believe, even though it isn't easy, respecting those we disagree with is one more way to be a light of hope...a light for God.
