We plan for vacations, parties, birthdays, goals, diets, summer, school, work, and more. Do we plan for crabby people? I was encouraged this week to make a plan for encounters with mean people. Sometimes we hold our breathe and close our eyes hoping they will go away. Other days we may just explode because we don't know what to do, and we feel hurt once again. God encourages us to make a plan so we respond correctly.
"Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge. I will repay," says the Lord...Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Romans 12:17-21) So that's the plan. First, don't throw dirt back. Isn't that our first reaction? Just watch two toddlers fighting over a toy. We react by throwing things, and we throw things back harder and meaner. We must have a plan before the encounter, or we may end up throwing dirt. Instead God tells us to live at peace with everyone. (Everyone is a lot of people!)Next, we are to live our lives in such a way that encourages peace...that takes a plan. Peace is calm. Is that how we respond...calmly?
Make a plan this week for the person who is driving you crazy. Plans help.
