When I was school shopping with a list of school supplies in hand, a lady asked me if I had a 5th grade student. I said yes, and she asked if I could name the items on the list. I asked what school, and she said that it didn't matter. She just needed a list. She was desperate, but she was going to buy the wrong supplies. Part of communicating is starting with the right information.
Proverbs 15 gives some key communicating information. First, the chapter starts out saying that we should answer in a gentle way. If we can answer gently, we might not be answered in anger. Some people are easier to respond to gently, but communication is just work. "A gentle response defuses anger, but a sharp tongue kindles a temper-fire." This verse would be a great one to memorize or write on a note card. When we communicate, we should respond in a gentle way.
Next, we need to be kind. Such a simple word. Kind at home, but also wherever we are. It is key in all our relationships and communication. If we are kind, it helps those around us. Verse four says, "Kind words heal and help..." We don't always know what kind of day the people around us have had. We can give kind words that will help and allow us to communicate effectively. When we communicate, we should be kind.
Proverbs are simple thoughts that are life-changing. Communicate gently and kindly.
